What does it mean to be the light?

By ourselves, we can't be the light. We are total darkness. It is not our light but God's light. This is not about making us seem greater or stronger. It is all about glorifying God and winning the hearts of the lost for Christ. If we try to make being a light about us, we are no longer being a light. We are attempting to cover up the light with darkness if it is all about us. God is light. God is the true light. We are the children of the light, therefore we are the children of God. If you were the child of the president and you robbed a bank, even though the president didn't rob the bank his reputation would still be affected. If we go our own way and still claim to be shining a light or to be a Christian, we are not setting a good example and are letting our Heavenly Father down. It is impossible for us to use our own power to win hearts for the Lord. Every good thing comes from the Lord. We are born sinful, but if we are really Christians Christ' light can shine through us. Be available, be God's light!
